Psychoanalysis was discovered by Sigmund Freud more than one hundred years ago and was later developed by Melanie Klein, Donald Winnicott, Jacques Lacan and many others. Classical psychoanalysis requires that the client attend more than 3 times a week for 50 minute sessions for a number of years. In Ireland there are many classical psychoanalysts but what is most commonly practiced is ‘psychoanalytic psychotherapy’ which requires that a client attend at least once a week but preferably twice a week for fifty minute or half an hour sessions depending on the therapist. Psychoanalytic psychotherapy differs from psychoanalysis only in intensity, as the same working concepts are used.
